IT challenges for financial advisers and brokers
Advice and broking businesses hold some of the most valuable data a criminal can steal: identity documents, tax returns, bank statements, payslips and policy details. Much of it arrives by email and sits in inboxes, CRMs and shared folders.
Money also moves. Settlements, premium payments and investment transfers make advisers and brokers a target for email compromise and fake bank detail requests. One hacked mailbox can be used to trick a client or a lender.
On top of that, your licensee, aggregator or insurer may ask how you manage cyber risk. You need systems that work every day and evidence that they are set up properly.

Compliance and obligations we help you meet
Financial services businesses carry obligations that touch IT directly. The detail depends on your licence, your licensee and your size, so treat this as a starting point.
- Licence obligations and cyber resilience: ASIC has made it clear that Australian Financial Services licensees are expected to manage cyber security risk as part of their general licence obligations, and credit licensees have similar general obligations. If you are an authorised or credit representative, your licensee may set specific requirements. We help you put practical controls in place and keep them up to date.
- Record-keeping: advice files, statements of advice, credit assessments and client communications may need to be kept for several years and produced on request. We set up storage and backups so records are secure and retrievable.
- Privacy Act 1988 and Notifiable Data Breaches scheme: many financial services businesses are covered by the Privacy Act, and the small business exemption may not apply in every case. Covered organisations must protect personal information and report eligible data breaches. We put the controls in place and help with the technical facts if something goes wrong.
- CPS 234: APRA’s information security standard applies to APRA-regulated entities such as banks, insurers and super funds. Most advice and broking practices are not APRA-regulated, but lenders, insurers and platforms may pass security expectations on to you.
- Ransomware payment reporting: under the Cyber Security Act 2024, businesses with annual turnover over $3 million must report any ransomware payment to the Australian Signals Directorate within 72 hours. Good backups and security make it far less likely you ever face that choice.
General information only, not legal advice. Confirm your specific obligations with your adviser or professional body.

Common questions
Do financial advisers have to meet cyber security requirements?
ASIC expects licensees to manage cyber security risk as part of their licence obligations, and many licensees pass specific requirements on to their advisers. We help you put practical controls in place. Check the detail with your licensee or compliance adviser.
Does CPS 234 apply to my advice or broking business?
CPS 234 applies to APRA-regulated entities such as banks, insurers and super funds. Most advice and broking practices are not APRA-regulated, but the lenders and insurers you work with may expect similar controls.
How do you stop fake bank detail emails to our clients?
We set up multi-factor authentication, email filtering and SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, and help you put a simple rule in place: any change to bank details is confirmed by phone before money moves.
Can you support our CRM and planning software?
Yes. We look after the devices, network, Microsoft 365 and access your CRM and planning software depend on, and work with your software vendor when an issue sits on their side.
