Website Conversion Checklist: 20 Fixes That Turn Visitors Into Enquiries
Plenty of small business websites get visitors. Far fewer turn those visitors into phone calls, form enquiries or bookings. The difference rarely comes down to a fancy design. It comes down to a set of practical details that either make it easy for someone to contact you, or quietly push them back to Google to try the next business.
Work through this checklist on your own website, ideally on your phone, where most of your visitors are.

First impressions (the first five seconds)
- Say what you do and where, above the fold. “Managed IT support for Hills District businesses” beats “Welcome to our website”.
- Show one clear main action. Call, book, or request a quote. Pick one primary button and make it obvious.
- Put your phone number in the header and make it tap-to-call on mobile.
- Load fast. If your home page takes more than about three seconds on a phone, many visitors leave before it appears. Check it with Google PageSpeed Insights.
- Look current. Old copyright years, broken images and outdated photos suggest the business may not be active.
Trust (why should they choose you?)
- Show real reviews, ideally your Google rating, near your calls to action.
- Use real photos of your team, office or work instead of generic stock images.
- Explain your process in three or four simple steps, so people know what happens after they enquire.
- Show proof: examples of work, anonymised case studies with results, certifications and memberships.
- Make contact details complete: business name, address or service area, phone, email and ABN. Our guide to website credibility covers trust signals in more depth.
Forms and calls to action
- Keep forms short. Name, phone, email and a message is usually enough. Every extra field costs enquiries.
- Use specific button text. “Book my free consultation” works better than “Submit”.
- Tell people what happens next, for example “We reply within one business day”.
- Repeat the call to action at the end of every service page and blog post.
- Test your forms monthly. Broken contact forms are one of the most common and most expensive website faults we find, and the business is often the last to know.
Content that answers questions
- Give each service its own page with who it is for, what is included and common questions answered.
- Talk about pricing. Even a “from” price or typical range, shown ex GST, filters out poor-fit enquiries and builds trust.
- Add FAQs that handle objections: contracts, response times, what happens if something goes wrong.
Measure, then improve
- Track enquiries as conversions in Google Analytics 4: form submissions, phone taps and email clicks. Without this you are guessing.
- Review monthly: which pages bring enquiries, which get traffic but no action, and where people drop off. Fix one page at a time.
Common mistakes we see
- A beautiful home page, but service pages with two paragraphs and no call to action.
- Phone numbers shown as an image, so they cannot be tapped on a phone.
- Pop-ups that cover the page on mobile before the visitor has read anything.
- Contact forms sending to an old staff member’s inbox.
- Paying for Google Ads that send visitors to the home page instead of a relevant landing page.
Where hosting and security fit in
A slow or hacked website destroys conversions overnight. If your site is slow, or you have ever had a security warning, read what to look for in business web hosting.
